UPCOMING EVENTS

October 20 - November 11

"Night of January 16th"

By Ayn Rand
Directed By Karen Bain

Tickets: $12 general admission / $9 students and seniors.

In this courtroom mystery the list of suspects grows while the murder trial is in session - surprising both the Defense and the Prosecution. Karen Andre, a great financier's mistress stands accused of his murder - with defiance of society's standards as the greatest evidence of her guilt. Did she or didn't she? If you enjoy unraveling who-done-its, you'll definitely enjoy the surprises in this play and - who knows - you just might have a say in the verdict.

NIGHT OF JANUARY 16th is a highly entertaining glimpse into Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. We learn about the man, Bjorn Faulkner, through the testimony of witnesses. He could be an embodiment of Ayn Rand’s philosophy which she defined herself as being partly built upon the belief that "Man - every man - is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. He must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself. The pursuit of his own rational self-interest and of his own happiness is the highest moral purpose of his life." Some witnesses uphold traditional mores and some admire the self-determination that Bjorn Faulkner represents. The contrast between these witnesses particularizes Rand's philosophical ideas in an engaging way. Come with a group of friends and you are sure to have a lively discussion afterwards.

The River is excited to welcome back one of its co-founders to the director's chair. Karen Bain holds an MFA in directing and actor training from UO. Her local work includes directing and teaching for Clatsop Community College, Astor Street Opry Co. and The River, in shows like Oliver!, Midsummer Night's Dream, and Buried Child. This play is from her list of favorites.
